About this experience
During the 2.5-hour tour, I will cover over 2000 years of Jewish cultural history on the Iberian Peninsula - but don't worry, it won't be boring at all! I will show you the locations of the Jewish quarters, talk about the role of book people in the country's science and economy. I will also reveal how the main attractions of Lisbon - the Liberty Avenue, Santa Justa Lift, Baixa district - are connected to the history of the Jews of Portugal.
What to Expect
Lisbon Synagogue
Telling the story of the Jewish community, I will start by showing you the oldest synagogue in the city that is sacred to the entire community. You will learn about whom and why the Portuguese say that it "makes the synagogue." And the Lisbon temple will reveal an intriguing architectural mystery that will make you scratch your head.
Witness of Events: Rossio Square
We will descend to one of the central squares of the city, where Lisbon merchants made dizzying deals. We will visit the Square of Tolerance and the church where the Jewish pogrom began in the early 16th century. In addition to the tragic events associated with the expulsion of Jews and the colonization of colonial lands, you will encounter historical curiosities and inspiring stories, including the tale of the Marquis of Pombal and three hats - an example of humanism and self-sacrifice, the "Portuguese Schindler," who saved three thousand lives during World War II.
Elder of Lisbon: Alfama
You will visit the oldest district of Lisbon, from which the modern city began. The colorfulness of the intricate intertwining of narrow streets leading to the majestic Tagus River is reminiscent of the ancient quarters of Jerusalem and Haifa. Our walk will continue in a tiny square, where the Lisbon Museum of Judaism will soon open. And we will finish the journey in the heart of the city, at the magnificent Commerce Square, one of the largest in Europe.
