The history of the Jewish people is an integral part of Bologna. First mentions of Bolognese Jews date back to the distant 4th century. Learn how the Jewish community appeared in Bologna and who were its famous representatives. Discover the connection of the famous basilica San Petronio with Judaism, and explore the churches of 'Holy Jerusalem'. And hear about the life of Bolognese Jews today.
What to expect
Complex of churches 'Holy Jerusalem'. It includes the oldest churches in Bologna. We will visit the temples of the 'Crucifixion of the Lord', 'Sepulcher of the Lord', 'Saints Vitalis and Agricola', and the 'Martyrium'. I will reveal which Bolognese bishop first made a pilgrimage to the Holy City, whose relics of great martyrs of Jewish origin rest in the crypt, where the Bolognese synagogue and Talmudic school were located.
Basilica San Petronio. You will closely examine a fresco by a Bolognese artist, directly related to the history of the Jewish people. I will tell you when distinguishing marks for Jews were introduced in Bologna, what they were like, and what sentiments prevailed here in the 15th century.
Hotel 'Red Cap'. You will learn why Jews were only allowed to stay there and what disobeying them could lead to.
Jewish Ghetto. We will stroll through the narrow streets where the ghetto was located in the Middle Ages. You will hear what Bolognese Jews were doing when a Hebrew department was established at the University of Bologna and what the Academy Germafina represented. I will also share the dramatic story of the Jewish Mortara family, which inspired the movie 'Taken'.
