About this experience
Traveling through mountainous Crete will introduce you to the everyday life and traditions of the locals. I will share insights on the geography, history, culture, and economy of the island, along with numerous legends and myths. We will visit authentic places hidden from the tourist eye and admire pastoral views from the mountain peaks.
What to Expect
Blooming Axiós Village
Our first stop will be the picturesque village of Axiós. As we ascend to an altitude of about 500 meters along a scenic winding road, we will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of surrounding mountains and valleys with olive groves. I will show you a museum of exquisite wooden sculptures and introduce you to a local sculptor who will answer all your questions. Looking at his works, you will feel the warmth and love put into creating the figures.
Four Lineages, Four Medieval Churches
Next, we will visit the authentic mountain village of Anogia, always a center of resistance against the island's invaders, from the Romans to the fascists during World War II. Medieval churches with Byzantine frescoes from the 12th-14th centuries and locals dressed in traditional attire will transport you back in time. The crystal-clear air rich with scents of mountain herbs and dishes of the national cuisine in cozy taverns will replenish your strength after exploring the village.
Secrets of Cave Dwellers
The Sfendoni Cave has more than 10 halls, but only the first five are open to visitors. Each hall has its own unique story and name. A local guide will lead you through the cave's "Fairy Sanctuary," "Hall of Harmonies," "Parthenon," "Room of Petrified Waves," and in the "Lost Child Room," will reveal a chilling medieval legend. You will admire stalactites and stalagmites, often merged into whimsical columns, encounter numerous snails, and sleeping bats.
