About this experience
Get ready to discover a non-classical, unexplored, and non-touristy Crete. In one day, you will meet nuns in a 16th-century ancient monastery, observe Greek life in a lost village, enjoy delicious seafood in Plaka, and wander the atmospheric streets of Agios Nikolaos.
What to expect
Kremaston Monastery, 'hanging from the cliffs'
The journey begins at one of the oldest monasteries in Crete, inaccessible by guidebooks or tour buses. The abbess will open the doors of the church for us, transporting you back centuries, diving into the history of Greek Orthodoxy and finding the hidden entrance to the secret school where children were taught during the Turkish occupation.
Picturesque villages and the spirit of authentic Crete
Heading into the mountains, we will reach a remote village where souvenir shops are scarce, but you'll witness the unhurried pace of Cretan life, learn about local traditions, and experience rural Greece. We'll stop at a traditional cafe to taste real Greek coffee or tea made from fragrant mountain herbs.
Fishing Village Plaka: immerse yourself in the Greek life
Descending a narrow mountain road, we'll arrive at Mirabello Bay for a photo stop to admire and capture the transparent turquoise sea and the mysterious island of Spinalonga. Then we'll reach the fishing village of Plaka, where you'll have free time to embrace the leisurely local life, sample the freshest seafood by the shore, and relax on a beautiful beach with perfectly round pebbles.
Panoramas of Agios Nikolaos
To conclude the journey, we'll visit Agios Nikolaos, known as the 'Cretan Saint-Tropez'. You'll be mesmerized by the local architecture, cozy alleys with endless staircases disappearing into the sky, and the special atmosphere of eastern Crete. We'll discuss modern Cretan life and the island's legends, admire the panorama from an observation platform above the freshwater Lake Voulismeni, or relax at a cliffside cafe with a glass of wine, enjoying the picturesque view.
