"... It was difficult to express the feeling that embraced him at the sight of the first Italian city - it was the magnificent Genoa. Her colorful bell towers, striped churches of white and black marble, and the whole multitoried amphitheater of hers stood out above her. This playing diversity of houses, churches, and palaces on the thin sky air, shining with an incomprehensible blueness, was unique. Descending to the shore, he suddenly found himself in these dark, wonderful, narrow, paved streets, with a narrow strip of blue sky at the top. He was struck by this crampedness between houses, tall, huge, the absence of carriage noise, triangular small squares and between them, like narrow corridors, winding lines of streets filled with benches of Genoese silversmiths and goldsmiths… he carried away Genoa as a beautiful station: in it he took the first kiss of Italy..."
