About this experience
It has been 8 years since the center of Rio became my home, yet I never cease to be amazed by its crazy energy and beauty. Here, colonial buildings coexist with gray 20th-century structures. Wealth and poverty, magnificence and dilapidation intertwine in a unified architectural space. How can one understand, feel, and love this extraordinary city? Join us on our stroll!
What to Expect
- I will tell you why the Cathedral of Saint Sebastian resembles a staircase in shape and has a symmetrical cross at its very top, and what the colors of the sides mean.
- How many arches does the Carioca Aqueduct have and how tall is it? We will examine an interesting example of 18th-century colonial architecture and discuss the purpose of the structure.
- You will hear about the tragic role played by the famous staircase in the life of its author, Jorge Selarón, who worked on it for a whole 23 years.
- We will walk a bit from Cardial Camera Square to the Municipal Theater - and the statue of Christ will reveal itself, as if in the palm our hands! Do you know that this is not just a monument made of cement, and inside there is a separately designed stone 'heart'? Let's discuss the city's symbol in detail!
In addition, the program includes: the picturesque Floriano Square (or simply Cinelandia), tobacco factories transformed into nightclubs, and much more. If desired, we will buy street food on the way or stop by a cafe to try feijoada. If you wish, we can take a ride on the historical Saint Teresa tram.
