About this experience
Just 70 km away from Baku lies the amazing open-air archaeological reserve Gobustan. You will see ancient human dwellings and stunning rock drawings on its territory. Even more interesting places are located in its surroundings. We will visit mud volcanoes, the Mosque of Fatima, the burning mountain of Yanar Dag, and the Zoroastrian temple of Ateshgah. We will discuss their history and present.
What to Expect
Gobustan Reserve is an open-air archaeological museum. During excavations, over 100,000 artifacts from different epochs were found here. You will see rock drawings from the Late Paleolithic to the Middle Ages, mounds, ancient dwellings, and settlements.
Mud Volcanoes - you will find yourself surrounded by Martian landscapes. You will climb to the volcanoes' crater and observe local chemical processes: boiling liquid clay and gas emissions.
Mosque of Fatima - its original building was blown up by the Bolsheviks in 1936. The reconstruction was carried out most carefully, based on photographs and records of travelers, architects, and writers. We invite you to evaluate the results!
Zoroastrian Temple Ateshgah - you will hear about the ancient fire-worshipping religion and visit the temple dedicated to it. We will decipher its architectural features and talk about modern Zoroastrian followers.
Burning Mountain Yanar Dag - you will see a mountain with a natural eternal flame burning at the top since ancient times. We will tell you how and why this happens.
