What to expect
Getting to know the palace-museum in a convenient format
Construction of one of the most famous and luxurious palaces in the world, the Louvre, continued for 800 years! I will tell you about the main periods in its history, about the features of the interiors and exteriors - such an excursion and a walk around medieval Louvre will help you imagine the life of the French kings' residence. We will take a walk around the palace-museum in the evening - this way you will really see the Mona Lisa, not just a crowd in front of her. The view of the pyramid, the inner courtyard of the museum, and the Seine at this time will be particularly beautiful.
Must-see in the Louvre collections
The prestige and pride of the Louvre lie in its art collection, not the largest in the world, but of immense historical value. It consists of 550 thousand items, 35 thousand of which are on display in the halls. You could study them for years, but in 2.5 hours you will have time to get acquainted with the most significant and famous exhibits:
- Great Sphinx of Tanis - the oldest 'resident' of the Louvre and the largest Sphinx outside of Egypt;
- Venus de Milo - an ancient Greek sculpture of the goddess of love and beauty. I will tell you about its origin, name, and significance in world art;
- Winged Victory of Samothrace - a sculpture of the goddess of victory, mesmerizing with the dynamism of movement;
- 6 paintings by Leonardo da Vinci - you will see all the canvases of the great Italian stored in the Louvre, including the mysterious Mona Lisa, and understand why this painting is known worldwide;
- Frescoes by Botticelli - a rare example of the Renaissance master's works outside of Italy;
- Slaves by Michelangelo - two sculptures by another Renaissance representative, not included in the final project for the tomb of Pope Julius II and thus ended up in France;
- Two largest paintings in the Louvre - 'The Wedding at Cana in Galilee,' a Venetian trophy of Napoleon, which remained in the Louvre thanks to a clever exchange, and 'The Coronation of Napoleon' by David - a representative of the neo-classical movement.
In addition, you will see romantic Amor and Psyche, the portrait of Balthazar Castiglione by the great Raphael, 'The Great Odalisque,' and other masterpieces of world art.
