About this experience
The Pearl of the East, the Paradise of the Muslim world, the Face of the Earth – Samarkand is known by many names. I will tell you about its vibrant life with brilliant rises and tragic falls. You will learn about how Samarkand was destroyed and revived, and see the monuments of the 'Eastern Renaissance' era, the peak of the city's development.
What to Expect
Multi-Faceted Samarkand
Samarkand is contemporary with Rome, Babylon, and Athens. I will unfold the history of the city, why it was once called Afrasiyab, what trade routes passed through it, and how Tamerlane influenced its fate. The excursion program includes:
- Gur-e Amir Mausoleum – you will admire the grandeur of Tamerlane's family tomb and decode its architectural symbols.
- Registan Square – the heart of Samarkand. Here you will learn about the rich history of the majestic madrasas of Ulugh Beg, Sher Dor, and Tilla Kori.
- Shahi-Zinda – the family necropolis of Timur's female relatives and military nobility, resembling a medieval city shimmering with azure colors.
- Bibi-Khanym Mosque – built by Timur for his beloved wife, it will impress you with amazing patterns, mosaics, and blue domes. In former times, there was no mosque equal to this one in the East or the West.
- Eastern Bazaar – a place that will enchant you with an abundance of local sweets, nuts, vegetables, and fruits.
