About this experience
The gaze of the 'Dutch Mona Lisa' continues to captivate people around the world. To find yourself in the settings of the Hollywood movie 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', you don't need to go to Hollywood. Just an hour's comfortable train ride from Amsterdam - and you will find yourself in a city renowned for its unique atmosphere of antiquity.
What to expect
Let's meet right at the station. After a walk through Delft, I'll bring you back, and on the way to Amsterdam you will already be proud of having seen not only the capital of the Netherlands.
In Delft, you will see that the girl in the blue scarf is looking at us from everywhere we go: from numerous souvenirs, porcelain items, and even advertising posters. I will tell you about the life of the town in the 'Golden' seventeenth century and interesting facts about Vermeer's biography, the author of the Dutch 'Mona Lisa'. He was born, lived, and worked in the very center of the city. We will stand by his baptismal font and his grave, see where his family lived, and where the largest collection of his paintings was in the 17th century.
The walk through Vermeer's places passes through the main sights of Delft, so this tour combines an informative lecture on art history with a walk through historical sites. We will also pay attention to other Delft themes: porcelain, especially as it is everywhere here, and the royal House of Orange-Nassau dynasty.
If desired, you can have a snack: from herring on ice to the famous sweet mini-pancakes 'poffertjes' hot and fresh await you! You cannot leave Delft without visiting the porcelain stores - they are right on the market square.
If desired, you can end the excursion by visiting the Vermeer Centre. You can simply enter this restored old guild building, explore the spacious foyer filled and adorned with numerous reproductions and souvenirs, and purchase a magnet with the 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'. Or even the exact same earrings as in the painting.
Organizational details
- Additional fee for a combined ticket to two churches: 5 euros per adult (+guide ticket)
- If we are going to visit the exhibition at the Vermeer Centre, then you will need to pay 9 euros for entry (+guide ticket), and the tour in this case will last an hour longer (the cost of the tour will increase by 50 euros)
- I recommend booking this tour on a Thursday or Saturday from April 13th to October 14th: in these days, along the canals, traders of near-antique goods set up their stalls
