About this experience
Strasbourg boasts 600 km of cycling paths, making a cycling tour not only a compromise between walking and driving, but also a great way to experience the atmosphere of the city. You will discover three different districts, see how the landscapes of the Old and modern city blend together, and have stops every 10 minutes to get to know the capital of Alsace.
What to Expect
Petite France
Start in the district where typical half-timbered houses from the 16th-17th centuries reflect in numerous canals. You will see locks, 'covered bridges', and Vauban's dam, while during stops, I will tell you how this district changed over centuries and what characteristics of half-timbering are typical for Alsace.
German Quarter
Next, cycle along the banks of Strasbourg towards a district that is on the UNESCO list. Let's talk about its origin and construction, how Strasbourg became a German city, and the changes that occurred in the daily life of its residents. You will also discover examples of German Art Nouveau, find the Egyptian House, and hear the story of the first postcards.
European Quarter and Orangerie Park
In this area, you will encounter famous European institutions: the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, and the European Court of Human Rights. I will explain how Strasbourg managed to become the center of international organizations without being a capital and discuss the symbolism of the European flag. The cycling tour will end in the Orangerie Park, the largest and oldest park in Strasbourg, where you will see the main symbol of Alsace—the stork.
