About this experience
Four Neapolitan castles will reveal their doors to you. You will learn about their rich past: about cunning conspiracies and triumphs of their conquerors, about architectural features and decor details. You will admire the panoramic view of the seaside city from the walls of Castel dell'Ovo, hear about the monuments of medieval architecture Capuano and Maschio Angioino, and take a funicular ride up to the 'star' castle Sant'Elmo.
What to expect
I will introduce you to medieval Naples. No city in the world has such a quantity of historical castles that were simultaneously royal residences, centers of monarchic power and might, where the king and his court resided. Foreign ambassadors came here, famous artists gathered, the royal council convened, and celebrations and feasts were held. Each castle, and there are four in Naples, has its own history. They witnessed crucial historical events: wars and conquests, sieges and popular uprisings, triumphal entries of victors and cunning plots. The castles belong to different medieval epochs and thus differ in architecture, decorations, and furnishings, bearing the imprint of rulers from different dynasties who reigned in Naples.
We will start with Castel dell'Ovo, the oldest castle in Naples, from the observation deck of which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the Bay of Naples. Here I will tell you the history of the city's origin. After that, you will be introduced to Castel Capuano and Castel Maschio Angioino (New Castle), each of which is an important architectural monument of medieval architecture. Then you will take a funicular ride to the Vomero hill and admire the view of Naples from the height of Castel Sant'Elmo, built in the shape of a six-pointed star, and also visit the ancient monastery of Certosa di San Martino, located right below the castle. The monastery is now a museum with a rich collection of paintings and medieval artifacts (royal carriages and chests), nativity scenes, and utensils.
If you wish, I can arrange an additional walk on the Vomero hill with a visit to the Floridiana Park. And on the way back, I suggest using the metro, built in a high-tech style, where each station is also an exhibition of contemporary art and will quickly transport you from the medieval era to the 21st century. After this tour, you will confidently be able to say that Naples is truly a city of contrasts.
