About the organizer
My name is Yelena. I am a candidate of art history and an independent curator based in London since 2009. Prior to moving here, I worked for 16 years at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow where I held various roles including curator of contemporary art, head of the press office, participation in exhibitions and the permanent collection creation, lecturing, guiding tours, and writing texts for catalogs. I curated special projects for the Moscow Biennale; curated exhibitions independently in Moscow and London; compiled and co-authored 'Cosmic Shift: Russian Contemporary Art Writing', ZED books (Bloomsbury), London, 2017. I write articles on art history and theory and am currently working on a book about women artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. I have a great affection for London museums and know their collections well. Visiting a museum is an exciting journey where each artwork is a whole world connected by invisible and not always obvious links to any other work, from a different epoch and culture. I love discovering these connections, as well as the techniques artists used to hold our gaze, make our hearts beat, and our minds work. I enjoy sharing what I uncover in paintings with my audience and embarking on a joint voyage, exploring the context of the era in which various artists worked, recalling the personal circumstances that left traces on the canvas - and experiencing the inspiration that artists continue to offer us through their works, sometimes across centuries. As a curator, I befriend artists and occasionally organize tours of studios and workshops. I lead tours at the National Gallery, the British Museum, Tate galleries, and to the most significant exhibitions of the season in London. Sometimes I arrange visits to private contemporary art galleries. I conduct tours in Russian and English.
