What to Expect
Alexandropol-Leninakan-Gyumri
In Gyumri, you can only understand the city by getting 'lost' in the ancient quarters. On Abovyan, Rustaveli, and Teryan streets, I will introduce you to the authentic architecture of the 19th century. And on Varpetov street, you can visit the museums of actor Frunzik Mkrtchyan, writers O. Shiraz, and A. Isahakyan. You will uncover the cinematic history of the city, where phaetons, streets, and balconies flashed on television screens. You will learn interesting stories behind each house. You will walk on the pavements and try to imagine the life of the inhabitants of Alexandropol. You will also visit the Armenian churches of St. Savior and Seven Wounds of the Holy Mother of God.
Russian Influence in Gyumri
On the walk, we will not overlook the Russo-Persian War of 1804-13, after which Gyumri became part of the Russian Empire. You will learn how Nicholas I influenced the city's development, visit the Russian church Plplan Jam, and inspect the mighty stronghold - Black Fortress, built to protect the borders from Persian and Turkish threats. You will see the memorial complex Hill of Honor and Mother Armenia monument. You will also hear about the modern military base and trace the city's long-standing connection with Russia.
History in the Surroundings of the City
We will follow the Silk Road. Special resting places were arranged along this ancient road for breaks and overnight stays. We will take a look into one of such caravan-sarais of the XII-XIII centuries and understand their organization.
