What to expect
Belém stories
Meeting at the Hieronymites Monastery, we will talk about the construction of this architectural wonder, the mysteries and enigmas of Portugal's Golden Age. I will tell you about King Manuel I, known as 'The Fortunate', and reveal the meaning of the name and history of the Belém district. Inside the Church of Santa Maria de Belém, you will learn why the sarcophagi of royal family members stand on elephants, as well as the tragic fate of the last representative of the Aviz dynasty, King Sebastian. At the entrance to the church, we will stop at the tombs of outstanding Portuguese figures - Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões - and discuss their deeds. And as you stroll near the beautiful Belém Tower, you will understand why a rhinoceros is depicted on one of its side turrets and what connection this has to the Roman Pope.
All about Portuguese pastries
Get ready to visit the most famous Lisbon pastry shop 'Pastéis de Belém': it was here that the original recipe for the iconic Portuguese custard tarts was invented. Over a cup of aromatic coffee with 'pastéis de Belém', I will tell you how these pastries originated, the secret of their preparation, and why you must absolutely try them here.
The era of explorers and navigators
The Monument to the Discoveries on the Tagus River waterfront will transport you to the era of the Great Portuguese Discoveries. You will explore the Portuguese navigators of the Golden Age, learn who was the first to circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope, and the connection of the legendary 'Flying Dutchman' to the cape. And of course, we will discuss how Portugal became the 'Queen of the Seas', the role played by the Order of the Templars in this, and how King Manuel I became the wealthiest monarch in Europe.
