What to expect
Maritime power
We will visit the special district of the city - Bethlehem Quarter, where the main events of the Age of Discoveries took place. You will visit Tower of Belem, built in honor of the discovery of the sea route to India, Church of Saint Mary of Bethlehem, and, if desired, Jerónimos Monastery, executed in the national style of 'Manueline', where in July 1497 Vasco Da Gama and his crew spent a night in prayer before departure. At the end of the 19th century, local monks invented the delicacy Pasteis - a basket of puff pastry with sweet custard cream, which you can try at a cafe-bakery.
Heroic landscape
On the banks of the Tagus River stands the Monument to the Discoveries. At the bow of the caravel - the figure of the inspirer of geographic discoveries, Infante Henry the Navigator, and on both sides behind him are 32 figures of outstanding Portuguese. I will tell you about the heroes of the monument, and you can climb to the observation deck, which offers a panoramic view of the old quarter and the river. In the square at the foot of the monument, we will examine the marble wind rose - a mosaic map of the world with routes and dates of maritime expeditions of the 15th-16th centuries.
