About this experience
Assisi is the city where St. Francis of Assisi was born, a pilgrimage site for people from all over the world. I will show you the places where the saint was born and buried, reveal the meanings and secrets of the frescoes preserved in the Basilica named after Francis. The program also includes visits to the Minerva Temple, the Cathedral of San Rufino, the People's Captain Tower, and the Church of St. Clare.
What to Expect
Basilica of Saint Francis (1 hr). Includes two churches: the lower part in Romanesque style (where the crypt containing the remains of St. Francis of Assisi is located) and the upper part in Gothic style, where we will examine one of the famous frescoes dedicated to the saint's life. The Basilica houses a vast amount of artworks by Giotto di Bondone, Pietro Lorenzetti, Simone Martini; I will discuss the most essential pieces. I will also explain the meanings behind the frescoes preserved on the temple's walls.
City Center Walk (2 hrs)
You will see the Municipality Square adorned with the Minerva Temple, the People's Captain Tower, and the beautiful Palazzo Priori. Visit the birthplace of Francis, explore the Church of St. Clare - the founder of the Order of Poor Ladies - and learn interesting facts from her biography. To conclude our stroll, I suggest a visit to the Cathedral of San Rufino to admire an extraordinary example of Romanesque art - the facade of this ancient church.
