About this experience
Rio de Janeiro is beautiful and diverse, and its favelas are truly a different world worth exploring! Join us on a journey to explore the colorful Santa Marta favela located on a hill. We will walk up through narrow labyrinthine staircases or take a funicular. Observe the local daily life and enjoy the views of Rio from above.
What to expect
Vibrant and unique Rio
Walking through the Santa Marta favela, you will learn:
- Why it's called the 'armpit of Christ'
- Where the world-famous video of Michael Jackson was filmed in the favela
- Why Santa Marta was considered the most dangerous place in Rio until the 1980s
- Who currently owns the favela and how ordinary people live in it
- What the 'warring factions of Rio' are and which one Santa Marta belongs to
And much more!
Plus
You will have a short dance lesson in a favela studio with a well-known local dancer - a resident of this favela. In just 10 minutes, you will learn basic movements of any Brazilian dance. And then you will have the opportunity to apply your new skills - and dance on the dance floor with a view of the city, where the Christ the Redeemer statue stands tall in the background.
