What to Expect
City beneath the city: ancient Odessos under Varna
You will wander through a living history textbook of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome - Odessos, built by the Greeks in the 6th century BC. It is now located right under Old Varna, less than a meter deep, and is revealed from underground whenever the city excavates the foundation for modern construction. You will walk through all of ancient Odessos - from Ioan Exarch Square to Independence Square, through Tsar Simeon the First Street. I will help you not to miss the main points and understand the preserved ancient masterpieces!
Visual History
I will show you the nymphaeum at the ancient spring, a guard tower through the floor of a modern coffee shop, ancient Greek walls in the basement of an English pub, and Odessos' sewage system. Additionally, there are ruins of an early Christian basilica, a fort, military and city baths, a Roman wall in an archaeological dig, and ancient water pipes. I will also tell you about how people lived in antiquity: what they studied, how they dressed, what wine they drank, and what jewelry they liked.
