About this experience
Milan was famous for its water canals! It was thanks to them that it gained the status of one of Europe's largest ports. Today, the canals come to life only in the evening and are the center of Milan's nightlife. Join me for a stroll along the canals to learn about the city's history.
What to Expect
Our journey will begin with exploring ancient basilicas located near the water. We will talk about the earliest period in Milan's history when the city was the capital of the Western Roman Empire for nearly 150 years. It was here in 313 A.D. that the Emperor Constantine signed the edict allowing the Christian religion, leading to the construction of early Christian churches - which we will visit.
At the same time, the ancient Romans, possessing the most progressive knowledge of hydraulics at the time, embarked on a colossal task of bringing water from nearby rivers to the city center. The work was not completed until many centuries later.
In the Middle Ages, Milan already acquired the status of one of the most important European ports (alongside Amsterdam and Venice), but the work on the canals continued until 1819. From the Basilicas, we will smoothly transition to the canals, observe the world's first lock - an invention of local hydraulic engineers, discuss the significance of the preserved canals, and ultimately, as the evening falls and the canal lights enticingly invite us to enjoy the night, we will conclude our walk in one of the bars, where you can savor a glass of wine along with a variety of snacks.
