About this experience
You will walk through the Moorish quarter of Santa Cruz, climb up to the ancient fortress of Santa Barbara, admire the city panorama from above, see magnificent buildings, and breathe in the fresh sea air on the picturesque promenade. I will show you all the iconic and secret places of Alicante, tell you their history and legends, help you not to get lost in the cozy medieval streets, and introduce you to the features of the local southern mentality.
What to Expect
Stroll along the promenade
We will start the tour at the Port Square - you will see the wonderful promenade with yachts and the city beach, famous for its 'Rubik's Cube' tile. Next, we will head to the Sea Square and stroll along the truly Mediterranean boulevard paved with marble stones in the shape of sea waves with a 3D effect. I will also show you the most beautiful house in the city, Enrique Carbó House in modern style and tell you the amusing legend associated with it.
Alicante from above
You will take a lift to the medieval Santa Barbara Fortress with towers and bastions. I will tell you about its connection to Arab dominance and why tour guides call it Alicante's 'visiting card'. From the fortress' viewpoints, you will enjoy the breathtaking view of the Old Town with church domes and cathedrals, the port, beach, and Castle of Santa Barbara.
Get lost in the Moorish streets
We will descend the mountain slope and enter a medieval fairy tale of the 12th century - the old Arab quarter of Santa Cruz with a labyrinth of narrow streets and white houses adorned with flowers and wrought iron balcony grilles. I will show you the 'face of the Moor' and tell you the legend born on this land. Continuing downhill, we will reach the heart of the Old Town - the Santa Maria Square, where the oldest Basilica of the Holy Virgin Mary with an 18th-century Baroque facade is located. You will admire the ancient decoration of the church and its luxurious altarpiece in Rococo style.
Town Hall Square and City Symbolism
You will walk along the main street of the old Arab city of Al-Lakant and see the Plaza of Saint Lucia with an ancient stone fountain. I will show you the famous city coat of arms and tell you its history and legends. Next, you will visit the Town Hall Square, where, if you are lucky, we will peek inside the 18th-century Town Hall with a Baroque-style entrance portal. You will see the marble staircase and the Dali sculpture at its base.
Secrets of Mushroom Street
In the 17th-century Cathedral of St. Nicholas, you will be impressed by the interior decoration in the early Spanish Baroque style. I will also show you the main La Rambla promenade, the ancient tower of St. Bartholomew, and the 'house with a lift' in exquisite modern style. You will 'catch your breath' at the romantic Miro Square with a fountain and flowers. Then, you will stroll along the lively Mushroom Street and visit the park of ancient ficus trees, Canalife, guarded by copies of Roman statues - the famous 'Alsibiades' dogs.
