About this experience
Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey is the second most visited place in France after Paris. The grand silhouette of the fortress seems to float in the air, surrounded by the sea. You will explore the labyrinths of the monastery and admire the lacework of Gothic architecture. Learn about the abbey's way of life and discover how life unfolds on the island.
What to Expect
A Castle from a Fairy Tale
On my car, we will drive along a picturesque road along the coast. A shuttle bus will take us to the very foot of the mountain, and in a moment, we will enter a fairy tale where everything breathes the Middle Ages and magic. Narrow streets and staircases will lead you up to the complex architectural intertwining of the monastery. You will enjoy a magnificent view of the bay: the water here ebbs and flows at an extraordinary speed – these are the largest tides in Europe.
Chronicles of the Abbey
Building a monastery on a mountain that becomes an island twice a day is quite a challenge. I will tell you how and under what conditions this magnificent structure appeared. I will share legends from its religious and military life: during the Hundred Years' War, the fortress withstood a 10-year siege. You will hear about the community’s way of life – today and in the times of the Middle Ages, understand what the abbey means for pilgrims from around the world. And, of course, we will talk about the bay's unique ecosystem and its incredible tides.
