About this experience
Azerbaijan is home to a remarkable legacy of ancient rock art and almost half of all mud volcanoes in the world, with the majority located on the Apsheron Peninsula. The most famous ones are near the city of Gobustan, where you will embark on your journey. You will explore the amazing world of these formations, then head to the pink lake, fire mountain, temple of fire, and luxurious mosque made of precious metals.
What to Expect
Gobustan Historical and Artistic Reserve
The excursion to mud volcanoes will start with a visit to a modern interactive museum, where you will learn about the ancient human settlement, their life and daily routine, as well as get acquainted with the flora and fauna of the period when these places were inhabited by humans. After that, we will take you to the mountain ranges destroyed by earthquakes, resulting in caves where primitive people lived. On the walls of shelters and neighboring rocks, you will see carved images of humans, animals, hunting scenes, and various signs from the Upper Paleolithic period. Currently, the number of identified drawings exceeds 6,000! The Gobustan Historical and Artistic Reserve is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl visited this place multiple times and wrote a book about his sensational discoveries. During the tour, you will learn about them, including the significance of the rock with a Latin inscription dating back to the 1st century.
World of Volcanoes and Crystal Mosque
We will show you the most interesting geological formations - you will learn about the nature and chemical properties of high and low volcanoes, griffins and buried, underwater and underground. And on the way back to Baku, you will visit a shrine made of noble metals. In the mosque-mausoleum rests the descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. The building itself is a significant monument of Azerbaijani Islamic architecture. You will learn about its troubled history and the reasons for the constant interest from travelers and researchers.
Pink Lake and Eternal Fires of Baku
We will visit the Temple of Fire Ateshgah and the fire mountain Yanardag, stop at the pink lake, mesmerizing with its unusual color, and finally, drive into the village of Balakhani, where the first oil refinery in the Caucasus was built. You will also see oil derricks. Here you can approach one of them. Touch the oil droplet falling from the crane with your finger - tell your friends that you held real "black gold" in your hands!
Tasting Fish and Tea with Herbs on the Caspian Coast
Being in Baku and not visiting a fish restaurant is impermissible! I will invite you to one of the non-touristic places, at the very edge of Apsheron, where you will see the peculiar dachas of Bakuvians. On the way, I will tell you about the peculiarities of dacha traditions and dacha town planning and the amazing object of daily life in each Bakuvian dacha, without which no dacha house in our country can be imagined. Afterward, we will sit in a bungalow in a cozy atmosphere - the tables are set near the shoreline. You will try signature dishes made from Caspian fish (sturgeon, beluga, mullet, kutum, etc.) with sorrel and pomegranate sauces and the spice sumac, as well as flatbread with a mysterious filling that combines unmatchable ingredients. Relax from the hustle and bustle, drink tea with herbs. The prices here are reasonable, the staff is attentive, and the food is delicious.
