About this experience
You will see all the main attractions of Verona: Piazza Bra, delle Erbe and Signoria, the houses of Romeo and Juliet, the church of San Giovanni in Fonte. You will walk along the Adige river promenade and learn about the problems and joys of ordinary Italians.
What to Expect
In Juliet's Footsteps
The walk will begin at Piazza Bra, where I will tell the story of the Arena—one of the oldest amphitheaters in the world. Passing through the ancient street of Mazzini, you will peek into Juliet's courtyard and learn how accurate Shakespeare was in describing Verona and the raging passions between the Montagues and Capulets. You will also find out what Dante's connection to "Romeo and Juliet" is.
The Oldest City Squares
You will visit Piazza delle Erbe, where the city's construction began, and explore its attractions: the Lamberti Tower, the Fountain of the Madonna of Verona, and the column with the winged lion. I will tell you about Verona's connection to Venice, reveal the origin of the word "ghetto," show you the Arco della Costa, and homes painted with frescoes from the 17th century. At Piazza dei Signori, you will see the monument of Dante—he lived in Verona in the early 14th century at the court of Cangrande Scaliger. You will hear about the powerful Scaliger dynasty and its relation to the Milanese La Scala Theatre.
Riverside Stroll
I will show you the house of Romeo and uncover the mystery of the mystical arches. Afterwards, you will head to the Adige riverfront, pausing to visit the Gothic church of Saint Anastasia. You will admire the hill of St. Peter overlooking the rushing waters of the river, and learn about the early local settlements and the construction of the ancient Stone Bridge.
