About this experience
Every city is like a matryoshka. To truly feel the atmosphere of Verona, we will discuss its urban planning, architecture, sculpture, and visual arts. I will show you the main attractions, point out the unusual facade details, and share the secret knowledge of an art expert!
What to Expect
Roman Verona
The historical center of Verona was founded by the ancient Roman priestly college of augurs. I will tell you about the ancient magi-scholars who built the city following the flight of birds and how the 'Gates of Italy' looked many centuries ago on our walk. You will see the main components of a Roman city: the forum at Piazza delle Erbe, ruins of Roman walls and baths, entrance gates, the arena and its titanic construction. I will share the troubled fate of the Gavi Arch, lead you to the Roman outpost of Porta Borsari, and show you the archaeological zone.
Art, Culture, Architecture
I will talk about the peculiarities of medieval Gothic and Venetian styles, draw your attention to the amazing frescoes of aristocratic palaces on Corso Cavour. We will stop at iconic sculptural monuments and discuss the history of their creation, the characters they are dedicated to, allegories, and iconography of the Northern Renaissance era. We will explore Castelvecchio Castle and discuss its features after the reconstruction by Carlo Scarpa. You will pass by the oldest church in the Veneto region, the Romanesque church of Saint Lawrence and Saint Matthew, as well as stroll along the 'medieval toilets' street. The Well of Love, the House of Mazzanti, Juliet's and Romeo's houses, Lamberti Tower, the Gothic Scaliger Cemetery, and much more - I am happy to share years of experience and show Verona from an unexpected perspective!
