About this experience
The Turkish hammam is a real mystery with a rich history and rituals. I will take you through the winding streets of the Old City and show you 3 ancient baths. I will tell you how the hammam appeared in Turkey, what role it plays in public life, how baths are built according to canons, and what rooms they consist of. And then we will consolidate our knowledge in practice in a picturesque non-touristy hammam!
What to expect
Immerse yourself in the world of Turkish hammams
Strolling through the Old City, we will see three magnificent ancient baths. One of them was built by the wife of the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II. The other, dating back 600 years, is notable for its wooden interior: if possible, we will appreciate it. We will definitely visit the third one - and talk about the traditional arrangement of the hammam using it as an example. You will learn:
- How Turkish baths originated
- Why women were allowed to stay here all day with friends in the Ottoman period and how they spent their time
- Why baths, along with the mosque and bazaar, were built in the city center
- Why holes the size of a saucer were made in the domes of the baths
- Why baths are so important for all peoples of the lands of Antalya
After the theoretical part, we will move on to the practical part - and visit a Turkish hammam for locals. I can go with you or wait outside. In the hammam you will find warm marble slabs, a sauna, a scrub with a special kese glove, foamy and oily massages. After the relaxing procedures, I will invite you for a cup of Turkish tea with delicious milk baklava and goat ice cream.
