About this experience
I invite you to take a walk through the Roman Testaccio cemetery, which is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful and significant in the world. I will introduce you to the history of the cemetery and the biographies of the people buried here, we will talk about Rome's relationship with those who came to this city, including discussing the Russian influence left here.
About Testaccio
Artistic tombstones, an ancient wall, the pyramid of Cestius reminiscent of the funerary cult of ancient Egyptians, noble cypresses and pines, magnificent flowers - all this forms an ensemble of extraordinary expressiveness, the melancholic charm of which is enhanced by the silence and tranquility so uncharacteristic of the always bustling Rome.
Here, in this monumental splendor, people from different countries found their final resting place, united by their love for the banks of the Tiber and by the fate that destined them to spend their final years under the Italian sky. These are the English, Scots, Germans, Swedes, Swiss, Americans, representatives of other 'non-Catholic' nations, totaling more than four thousand people.
The Testaccio Cemetery is unique for many reasons: it is one of the first modern-type cemeteries in Europe, i.e. not medieval, next to a church, but on the outskirts of the city. Moreover, paradoxically, the 'foreigners' cemetery' is the oldest of the surviving cemeteries in Rome. Most importantly, it is a valuable historical and cultural memorial.
