About this experience
Ravenna is an absolutely incredible place! Throughout its history, it has been the capital of different empires and kingdoms three times. Byron, Dante, and Hesse wrote about it. I will tell you how Ravenna managed to preserve the stunning mosaic complexes of the 5th and 6th centuries and help you understand the meaning embedded in them.
What to expect
Ravenna and Dante
Ravenna is often and quite rightly associated with Dante by travelers. It is here that the great poet spent his last years and was buried. You will see his tomb and learn about the struggle for Dante's ashes between Ravenna and Florence, where he was born. I will also reveal how the capital of mosaics is mentioned in the 'Divine Comedy'.
Ancient temples and mosaics
You will explore the iconic sights of Ravenna: the Byzantine basilica of San Vitale from the 6th century and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia with 'golden stars' on the blue ceiling. In addition, I will help decipher the mosaics of the ancient basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo and show you the cozy church of San Francesco.
