Naples is a multifaceted city. It can dazzle the traveler with the brilliance of expensive hotels and the poverty of narrow streets, entice with food aromas and assault the senses with sharp smells, enchant with Byzantine mosaics and offer counterfeit Louis Vuitton, impress with hospitality and leave you without a wallet. I will show you the various facets of Naples and reveal its unique character.
What to Expect
You will see Greek walls and Roman decumans, medieval castles and Gothic churches, baroque palaces and poor quarters with the ubiquitous ‘bassi’ – windowless apartments with doors opening onto the street. I will tell you:
- How the horses from the Anichkov Bridge ended up at the gates of the Royal Palace
- What the statues of kings in Plebiscito square are discussing
- Which plot from 'Game of Thrones' is taken from Neapolitan history
- What happens when the blood of St. Januarius does not boil
- Why Neapolitans ‘adopt’ the anonymous skulls from the Fontanelle ossuary
We will also discuss local traditions, superstitions, and the lottery – we might even try our luck and buy a ticket. If we are lucky, we might meet the famous Neapolitan character Sho-Sho, who wards off curses and misfortunes.
