About this experience
Rostov Veliky is a city that breathes not just antiquity, but hoary antiquity. You will visit its majestic Kremlin and understand why and how it has survived to this day. Take a walk along quiet streets, learn about Rostov merchants, uncover the legends hidden in Lake Nero, and discover how the son of a priest turned into a legendary hero.
What to Expect
The Harmony of the Rostov Kremlin
Rostov Kremlin is primarily the residence of the metropolitan; the guide will tell you about its construction and about Metropolitan Jonah – a prominent figure in the history of the fortress and the entire city.
- We will go out to the ceremonial Metropolitan Courtyard and talk about the purpose of its buildings.
- We will walk through the ancient Veche Cathedral Square and visit the Assumption Cathedral: here you can venerate the relics of Leontius of Rostov, the first saint of the Northeast and the first preacher of Christianity in Russia.
- We will see the bell tower of the Assumption Cathedral with 15 bells, where the largest and oldest of the operating bells in Russia – the bell 'Sysa' is hung.
- We will see the Church of the Savior on Senya, the Odigitria church, and other monuments.
You will be impressed by the towers and walls of the Kremlin – it is them that the heroes of the movie "Ivan Vasilievich..." ran along. And then from the height of the earthworks, you will admire the view of Lake Nero (which, by the way, is more than 500 thousand years old!) and hear about the treasure from the time of the Tatar-Mongol yoke.
Walk through the historical center
After that, we will explore the city. We will go to the Gostiny Dvor surrounded by a gallery with arcades; talk about the fate that awaited the Konushenny yard – the only one in Russia that has survived to this day. And of course, we will admire the merchant mansions of the 18th-19th centuries. You will learn about gingerbread and other crafts in Rostov, about how the founder of the manufactory gave all his wealth to the city, and also remember Alyosha Popovich, who, according to legend, comes from these places.
