"Antwerp is to live; all the rest is parking" (local saying)
What to Expect
Antwerp from Bruegel to Balenciaga
As you stroll through the city's streets, you will encounter an incredible mix of architectural styles. Art Nouveau, Europe's first skyscraper, and "Flemish cauldrons" - I will share intriguing stories about these structures. We will also talk about fashion and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where Van Gogh and the head of Balenciaga house studied. We will visit jewelers - and you will become more knowledgeable about diamonds.
Meeting the Locals
Antwerpians are considered the most stylish residents of the Kingdom. You will see for yourself: they have plenty to be proud of! Learn about the daily lives of the locals and ancient traditions, observe their habits, and see how they present themselves. Additionally, I will explain why those who couldn't buy bread at the bakery were considered beggars.
Tasting Antwerp
You will remember the difference between Brussels and Liège waffles - and see how they are actually made. I will point out where to buy the best biscuits and croissants. We will explore the trendiest Chocolate houses and uncover the secrets of Napoleon's Palace. And at the fryer's workshop, we will try delicious French fries - a gift to the world from Belgians!
Market Day - A Festive Occasion
If we meet on weekends, we will head to Vogelmarkt, or the Bird Market - the principal social event of the last 600 years. People come here to see and be seen, and the stalls offer a variety of goods! Be sure to taste fresh oysters and 'kava' - a champagne equivalent. And if the weather is nice, our stroll will be accompanied by dances and the sounds of the national musical instrument - the saxophone.
