About this experience
If you are traveling on a cruise liner along the coasts of Mexico, one of the stops will be at the port of the country's largest island, known by the ancient Mayans as the 'Land of Swallows'. With an abundance of local offerings, it's easy to get lost, so I have put together a comprehensive program for you to get acquainted with all aspects of Cozumel. Explore the ruins of the city of San Gervasio, learn about the cult of the goddess Ixchel; explore the world's second largest coral reefs with a stunning underwater world; swim with dolphins; and, if desired, visit a tequila factory and a pearl farm.
What to Expect
Ancient Mayan Culture on Cozumel Island
The 'Land of Swallows' is one of the most visited islands in Mexico with a mysterious history and unique culture. During the excursion, I will tell you about its main symbol - the Mayan goddess of feminine energy and fertility, Ixchel. You will learn about the pilgrimage that girls in the distant past made by canoe, covering a distance of 26 kilometers. You will also learn how this tradition has transformed into the annual 'Sacred Mayan Journey'. In the ancient city of San Gervasio, you will explore the ruins of the temple complex and hear about the role of Ixchel cult in Mayan mythology. In the cozy capital San Miguel, you will stroll among colorful houses, learn about the daily life of the locals, and taste the most delicious ice cream on the island. You will also visit a museum where I will present exhibits dedicated to the nature and history of Cozumel.
