What to Expect
A Journey Through the Ages
Since 1930, the museum has been housed inside the Ilissia villa, which is a work of art in itself. I will tell you about the construction of this magnificent building and its first owner - the Duchess of Plaisance. Then we will move on to the exhibits: we will understand the symbolism of ancient frescoes and explore the rich collection of icons from different eras and painting techniques. You will discover what 'Latin manner,' 'Greek manner' means and why these terms appeared in Crete.
Byzantine Empire: History, Religion, and Architecture
I will share many interesting facts from the history of the Byzantine Empire, which lasted for over 1000 years. You will learn how it got its name and what its inhabitants called themselves, the architectural features and main types of Byzantine temples, and how pagan symbols were used in new art. You will also hear about the role of Christianity in the empire's governance system, the power of its rulers, and the life of ordinary people.
