About this experience
Join me on a journey following the footsteps of artist Pieter Brueghel the Elder in modern Brussels. You will walk through Marol - Brueghel's district, see the church where the painter got married and was buried, find his images on the Town Hall and streets around the Grand Place square. I will tell you what connects Brueghel's paintings and performances of Brussels puppeteers Tonov and why Jacques Brel mentions Brueghel in the song 'Beer'. You will also visit a folklore beer bar and feel its incredibly joyful, festive atmosphere.
What to Expect
Brueghel in the City Streets
The walk will start at the 12th-century Church of St. Nicholas. I will show you the Blind Men's Fountain and the nativity scene 'The Nativity of Christ in Brussels' with characters from Brueghel's paintings. Then we will go look for Brueghel's images on charming streets around the central square, taking a glimpse at Brussels' main 'doll' - the Manneken Pis. I will explain the role of dolls and puppets in the history and modern life of the city. You will experience the full range of Brussels puppets - from the smallest in the nativity scene to the giants of festive processions.
Marol and Folklore Beer Bars
You will explore Marol - Brueghel's district, where he married, lived, and was buried. By elevator, we will ascend from Marol to the Upper Town, where you will visit the popular bohemian district Sablon, see the Museum of Fine Arts, and stroll through the picturesque Art Hill. Finally, we will stop by one or two folklore beer bars near puppet theaters, where you can try amazing local beer. I will tell the story of these unique drinking establishments and local folklore festivals, one of which is named after Brueghel.
