About this experience
Since the time of communism, Budapest has been the center of alternative life in Eastern Europe. This tour will immerse you in the past and present of the urban underground. You will follow the traces of informal art and learn about the life of the 7th district with its bars and clubs. Visit current establishments and events where the activities of the city's political activists, from leftists and anarchists to feminists, are developing. And in the end, in just two hours, you will discover the alternative culture of Budapest behind its facades.
What to Expect
Budapest from a different perspective
Already in the second half of the last century, you could find any underground scene in Budapest—from underground clubs to gatherings of anarchists and punks. You will learn about the development of this side of the city's past and its current relevant life. I will tell you about its relationship with the government and the forms of resistance by residents—from organizing squat houses with loud parties and free concerts to creating unusual protest monuments.
Lively life of the 7th district
The main part of the tour will go through former Jewish quarters, where due to official politics, the main venues of alternative life had to move to. We will stop at the two most famous establishments, Aurora and Golya, which, despite their small size, attract hundreds of artists, musicians, intellectuals, and independent activists every week. To capture the spirit of the lively district, we will also visit one or two alternative art spaces—depending on the current events during your visit.
