Stroll through the atmospheric quarters and narrow streets of the village to immerse yourself in its ancient history and learn about the unique Balakhani culture. I will explain why people have settled here since ancient times, introduce you to traditional crafts, and talk about the customs of the Tats. I will also show you 14th-century monuments and help you feel at home in our famous bazaar.
What to Expect
History and Color of Balakhani Village
As you explore the ornate residential houses from the 18th-19th centuries, you will hear the story of how the region was developed, learn about the history of oil production in Azerbaijan, and how it changed the lives and destinies of settlements. We will delve into the distant past at the 14th-century Güm hamamı complex, where I will talk about the bathing traditions of the Balakhani residents. We will also visit an underground water reservoir - the Ovdan of the same century, which is a well accessed by 40 steps.
At the center of folk art, you will be introduced to ancient Azerbaijani crafts. We will take a short break for tea with aromatic jam at a local's house from the 18th century. I will talk about the traditions and customs of the Tats, who have been living here for ages. You will also see the first monument in Azerbaijan, hear about the first Azerbaijani football team formed in Balakhani, the history of cinema, and the first film shot here in 1898. We will also not overlook the famous personalities who were born in this village and brought fame to it worldwide or simply visited at different times.
Flavors and Aromas of the East
At the oldest Azerbaijani bazaar, you will be able to taste black caviar and delicate smoked sturgeon, local dried fruits and sweets, learn all about the famous Azerbaijani tomatoes, the best varieties of tea and tarragon, as well as about Absheron saffron and other aromatic spices.
