About this experience
Meet the younger brother of the Grand Canyon in the USA - the Charyn Canyon. In the geological open-air museum, you will encounter Martian landscapes, ancient legends, and indescribable energy. I will guide you through the 'Valley of Castles', tell you about the spirits living in the earth's fault, and the more noticeable inhabitants, as well as introduce you to the geography of the region.
What to Expect
Brief Excursion
The road to this amazing natural monument will be long but fascinating. Along the way, I will talk about the climate peculiarities of Kazakhstan, local flora and fauna, as well as life in Almaty. You will learn about the main attractions of the Charyn National Park, the origin of the canyon's name, unusual archaeological finds, and the interesting desert ecosystem. Vertical cliffs up to 150 meters high, mysterious gorges, and picturesque panoramas await you!
Witches, Wolves, and Spirits
Standing next to rocks that are 12 million years old, you will hear mysterious legends and tales. Why is one of the gorges called the 'Witches' Haunt' by the locals? Which endangered species used to attack lone travelers? What mystical phenomenon awaits you in the 'Valley of Castles'? We will encounter numerous endemic plants, as well as many birds and animals: steppe eagles, golden eagles, goitered gazelles, foxes, hares, and of course, lizards. I will talk about the local beliefs, and you will understand why the canyon is considered a sacred place. Maybe even feel it!
Organizational Details
- The excursion takes place in a comfortable Nissan Pathfinder (7 seats) or Toyota Prado (7 seats) vehicle
- I will pick you up from the hotel and drop you back after the tour
- If desired, we can make a stop at the traditional market and also visit a cafe for lunch (meals are not included in the price of the tour)
- Make sure to wear closed-toe shoes. In summer, bring a head covering and swimwear - although the river is mountainous, it warms up in July-August
- I am a flexible guide and ready to adapt to your preferences - change the route, prepare a snack for a picnic, or extend the tour time if you wish to stay overnight in a tent or hotel
