About this experience
By leaving Milan for just half a day, you will find yourself in a completely different Italy. A treasure trove of medieval and Renaissance art, Pavia will appear before you as the quintessential Italian town: winding streets, cobblestone squares, and medieval palaces. And I, as a local, will tell you about it - with love and without dry facts.
What to Expect
- We will start the tour with a leisurely walk along the Ticino river embankment, from which you will have a view of the picturesque Covered Bridge, built by the Romans and, despite numerous destructions, has survived to this day.
- We will not overlook the monumental Cathedral with the third largest dome in Italy and an amazing marble interior.
- Like students, we will visit the University of Pavia - one of the oldest higher education institutions in Europe. I will show you the building from the inside and take you through the courtyards and galleries.
- We will visit Piazza della Vittoria and Leonardo da Vinci, enter the cool and dim Romanesque San Michele Basilica with 12th-century sculpture, and then - the empty churches of Santa Maria del Carmine and San Teodoro with unique and unknown frescoes to the wider audience.
- Lastly, we will explore the impregnable Visconti Castle and definitely talk about the famous towers of Pavia.
Organizational Details
- Getting from Milan to Pavia is easy: 20 minutes (1 stop) by suburban train from Milano Rogoredo station or 25-30 minutes from Milano Centrale (3 stops). Trains run every 30-40 minutes. The ticket cost from any of the Milan stations is fixed - 4.40 euros
- The tour takes from 1.5 to 2 hours. In case of route changes due to reasons beyond my control (bad weather, siesta, sudden closures), we will adjust and make the program no less, and maybe even more interesting!
- The city is located on a plain, with almost no descents and ascents, so the tour does not require special preparation. There are no age restrictions.
- When booking the tour, please note that from 12:30 to 15:30 many churches in the city may be closed for siesta. To see the maximum number of interesting places, I recommend booking the tour in the morning hours (before 13:00) or in the second half of the day (from 15:00).
