What to expect
Beloved resort of European and Russian aristocracy
While strolling through the streets of this ancient town, you will learn about its history, find out how its inhabitants lived in the past, and why a whale is depicted on the city's coat of arms. I will tell you how Biarritz gained popularity among European aristocracy and who is responsible for the elegant Belle Epoque architecture. In addition, we will talk about the 'Russian' or 'velvet' seasons of Biarritz - Anton Chekhov, Alexander Scriabin, Vladimir Nabokov, and Vasily Aksenov all lived and vacationed here. In the 'Russian quarter' you will see the preserved mansions where many famous people lived (including Igor Stravinsky). You will also encounter the Orthodox Church of Alexander Nevsky and the nearby Russian Street, evidence of a significant 'Russian influence' in the city. And of course, our program will include the most luxurious palace in Biarritz - the former summer residence of Empress Eugénie, now the Hotel du Palais. Near this symbol of a bygone era's prosperity, you will hear stories of society balls, extravagant receptions, and famous guests from around the world.
Grand Beach and the charm of the Old Port
On the main beach of Biarritz, where the protagonist of Nabokov's 'Lolita' first saw his muse, you will take a pleasant seaside walk, learn how the city became the European surfing capital, and hear amusing stories of conquering ocean waves. Passing through Bellevue Square, located next to the main beach, you will head towards the Old Port, where the atmosphere of fishing life still lingers, and in the former white houses of fishermen, there are restaurants serving dishes made from fresh fish and seafood. After that, you will see perhaps the most emblematic corner of Biarritz - the rock of the Virgin Mary, crowned by a statue of the Virgin Mary. You will learn why this place is of special significance to the city's residents and take in the coastline from a beautiful panoramic viewpoint.
Historic cafes, Coco Chanel, and views of the Basque Coast
You will walk along Masagran Street, dotted with its diverse shops and street cafe terraces. Along the way, you will come across the most famous cafe in Biarritz, opened in the 19th century, where kings and dukes loved to visit for rum and ladies. Nearby, you will see the house where Coco Chanel had her boutique, and learn how her friendship with Russians influenced her creative path. At the end of the tour, if desired, you can climb the lighthouse at Cape Hainsart, overcoming 248 steps, and explore the surroundings - the Basque Coast, the ocean, and the mountains - from fantastic perspectives.
