About this experience
Belgrade Fortress is a key landmark not only of Serbia, but of all Europe. It witnessed the clash of civilizations: medieval Europeans called Belgrade the 'Fortress of Christianity,' while the Ottoman conquerors named it the 'House of War.' The fortress hill was dubbed the 'Contemplation Cliff.' We will explore the site of these events and I will explain why all its names were fitting.
What to Expect
Discover fascinating facts about the history, geography, and architecture of Big and Small Kalemegdan (the area between the fortress and residential quarters), as well as Upper and Lower Towns of Belgrade Fortress.
Among other things, we will discuss:
- the location of ancient Singidunum - the Celtic precursor to Belgrade Fortress
- how the famous Belgrade fountain first sank into the sea and then 'resurfaced' in Zagreb
- whether the Roman Well has any relation to Ancient Rome
- the bird held in the hand of the monumental 'Victory Messenger' on the fortress' lookout point
- where the meetings of the Belgrade Masonic lodge 'Ali Koc' were held
- why the chandelier in the Ruzica church is made of rifle cartridges and sabers
- the dark reputation of Nebojsa Tower
- the underground network connecting different parts of the city, built by Romans, Turks, and Austrians
- what Belgraders referred to as the 'Red Bull,' 'Red Rooster,' 'Two Cows,' and 'Three Hares'
- how the chimpanzee Sami, who occasionally escaped from the Belgrade Zoo, organized large-scale rallies and his other escapades while on the loose
- and many more interesting facts and events!
