About this experience
In the early 13th century, Philip Augustus built a fortress wall to protect the city from enemies. The culture and infrastructure flourished within this protected area, laying the foundation for today's Paris. On the tour, you will see famous and hidden attractions, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, and discover the remnants of the ancient wall.
What to expect
You will find yourself in the 'cocoon of Parisian civilization'. You will see the Pantheon, Sorbonne, Luxembourg Garden, Roman baths, Saint-Sulpice Church, New Bridge, Ile de la Cite, Notre-Dame, the beautiful Marie de Medici fountain, the narrowest street, and the oldest tree in Paris.
But don't worry - we will not only talk about history. You will get to know the city in all its beauty. Some of our routes will follow tourist paths, and some will lead you through peaceful Parisian streets. We will peek into courtyards and hidden parks, where I will ask you to find traces of the medieval wall - which is not always easy!
You will learn:
- what the Saint-Michel fountain hides;
- what Cardinal Richelieu has to do with the Sorbonne;
- where you can buy the famous macarons without the usual queue;
- why the Latin Quarter is also called Lutetia and the Hill of Saint Genevieve;
- what mystical stories are associated with the cat that caught fish;
- what happened between a young poetess Akhmatova and the artist Modigliani;
- and much more!
