About this experience
You will visit an 18th-century fortress on the banks of the Danube and discover what lies beneath it. I will tell you why the structure is shaped like a star and who and why built such structures. I will also reveal how the city of Novi Sad appeared and what role the fortress played in its formation.
What to Expect
Fortress Catacombs
We will walk around the grand structure, find the hidden entrance to the catacombs, and explore the underground passages. We will journey from the underground battle galleries and lower fortifications to the upper fortress.
Acknowledging the scale of the Gibraltar on the Danube, we will imagine a defense system consisting of over 16 km of tunnels, crevices, and passages. You will learn about life and service in the fortress, how it was defended, and how it fulfilled its purpose.
Fortifications and Novi Sad
You will hear about the history of fortification, its key turning points and events that changed the appearance of fortresses. And about how the city of Novi Sad was formed and its connection to Petrovaradin Fortress.
Organizational Details
- I recommend wearing comfortable hiking shoes and warm hiking clothes. These are real catacombs - sometimes dirty, sometimes wet, but incredibly interesting.
- Each participant will be provided with a flashlight.
