About this experience
Kyoto was Japan's capital and the main Imperial residence for over a thousand years, preserving around 2,000 Buddhist and Shinto temples. Needless to say, a journey through the Land of the Rising Sun would be incomplete without this city. On this tour, you will delve into the history and architecture of the shrines, learn about the concepts of different religious schools and folk beliefs, touch upon the enigmatic philosophy of ancient sages, walk through the filming locations of 'The Last Samurai,' and visit the most famous geisha district.
What to Expect
Japan's National Treasure - The Golden Pavilion, Kinkaku-ji
The tour starts with Kyoto's iconic Kinkaku-ji Temple, situated by a beautiful lake and covered in pure gold leaf. Within this 14th-century architectural marvel, you'll learn about its founder - the ruler Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the transformation of the shogun's residence into a Buddhist monastery, and its main relics: the statue of Avalokitesvara and religious murals.
'What one has is what all need'
Discussing this and other concepts of Zen Buddhism, we'll visit the legendary 'Dragon's Resting Temple' - Ryoan-ji, a sanctuary for monks of a prominent Buddhist sect from the mid-15th century. Admire the Philosopher's Garden, unravel the mystery of the 15 rocks and the local beliefs associated with them, decode the hieroglyphs on the stone basin for purification, and witness the restoration of the 'Seven Imperial Graves' by the legendary Japanese Emperor Meiji.
The Three Wise Monkeys and the Goddess Kannon's Shrine
Discover the famous 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' figurines at the ancient Koshin-do Temple rooted in Daoist folklore. You'll learn about the folk belief, the 'Kukuri-zaru' monkeys, and even get a chance to make a wish. Venture into one of Japan's most popular temples - Kiyomizu-dera, nestled on Mount Otowa, renowned as the 'Pure Water Temple' and the dwelling of the merciful goddess Kannon. Hear about the traditions of her worship, admire the craftsmanship of the complex's builders, and sip water from one of the three magical streams.
The Love Temple and the Legendary Sakura
At another temple - Jishu-jinja, discover an ancient marriage shrine possibly predating the formation of Japan. Learn about traditional Japanese rituals, symbolically walk between the 'love stones,' inspect the 'dragon looking in 8 directions' image, and hear the tale of the unique sakura tree thrice visited by Emperor Saga.
Japan's Most Beautiful Pagoda and the Famous Geisha District
As we approach the 5-tiered Goju-no-to Pagoda, Kyoto's symbol, we'll recall the iconic movies filmed here: 'The Last Samurai,' 'Wasabi,' 'Memoirs of a Geisha,' and others.
