About this experience
The winding streets with carved houses and lace balconies - one of the rare places in Istanbul where the architecture, religious sites, gastronomic, and cultural traditions of the 19th century are preserved. Away from modern markets, eastern noise, and merchants, you will immerse yourself in the atmosphere of charming 'old-fashioned' and old neighborly relations. I will introduce you to the history of the formation of one of the most tolerant districts of the capital, show you the house where F. Liszt lived, the establishment beloved by Meryl Streep, and the restaurant where masterpieces were created for Atatürk. I will reveal stunning views of the Bosphorus and take you to the art cafe near the district garden, as well as suggest where to try lavender ice cream and the best pastries.
What to expect
Ancient atmosphere of the other Istanbul
We will meet in the European part of the city and cross over to the Asian side on a boat, where you will see the Maiden's Tower and one of the most famous works of the architect Sinan, as well as the symbol of the medieval architecture of the Ottoman Empire capital - the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque. After walking along the promenade, you will reach Kuzguncuk. Of the 40 administrative districts of the metropolis, the charming quarter is hidden in Üsküdar, where you will meet non-touristic, ancient, and very soulful Istanbul. Walking through winding streets with wooden houses, you will understand why directors love it so much (many series were filmed here) and gather the missing pieces in understanding the multifaceted spirit of Istanbul.
History of one of the most tolerant districts of the capital
I will introduce you to the history of the suburb, which emerged in the 15th century. You will hear about the forced relocation of Jews from Spain, their traditions, which have become an integral part of the local culture, and the peaceful coexistence with Greeks, Armenians, and Turks. The almost side by side Orthodox churches, synagogues, and mosques will provide an opportunity to understand the mentality, values developed over centuries, and special social relationships that gave the district its uniqueness.
Details of life in Kuzguncuk and atmospheric spots
Along the way, you will learn where F. Liszt lived, which seafood restaurant Meryl Streep fell in love with. You will see the streets where popular movies were shot and the place where a local chef cooked culinary masterpieces for President Atatürk. You will also visit the district Kuzguncuk Bostanı Garden, where residents can grow vegetables, art cafe, where you can taste dishes made from organic products and cute bakeries with fragrant pastries. Additionally, the program will include several places that offer splendid and lesser-known views of the Bosphorus.
