About this experience
Walking through the historic center, you will see beautiful noble mansions and magnificent churches belonging to different brotherhoods and confessions. You will see the oldest fountain in Italy and appreciate the variety of products at the fish market. And I will tell you about the history of the city and reveal some Salento secrets.
What to Expect
The historic center of the city, Citta, is located on the island and connected to the new part, Borgo, by an ancient bridge. According to many scholars, Gallipoli is home to the oldest fountain in Italy, Fontana greca, 3rd century BC. The entrance to the medieval part of the city is still guarded by the Angevin Castle from the 13th century, and the art collection of the Cathedral and the churches of Della Purità will impress you with the abundance of 17th-century paintings that have been beautifully preserved to this day.
But Gallipoli is not only historic noble mansions and magnificent churches belonging to various professional brotherhoods. It is also the freshest fish at the famous fish market, charming restaurants with breathtaking views, shopping on the main street of the new city via Roma, beach discos until the morning, and the purest emerald sea!
During the walking tour, I will reveal the secrets of Salento to you. You will learn,
- who hides under the hoods during religious processions on the eve of Easter?
- why was the lamp oil from Gallipoli considered one of the best in the world?
- what made the famous Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio visit one of the island's churches at night?
At the fish market, I highly recommend trying the freshest seafood, and in restaurants
- seppia alla gallipolina (oven-baked cuttlefish);
- zuppa alla gallipolina (soup of shellfish and fresh fish);
- polipo alla pignata (octopus in a pot).
