About this experience
In the 19th century, Catalonia was an incredibly developed industrial region. Numerous factories were built here, alongside houses for workers and institutions for their comfortable living. These complexes were called colonies - and we will visit one of the most famous ones. We will immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of the late 19th - early 20th centuries and see the creations of Catalan modernist architects, including Antoni Gaudi.
What to expect
The Guel Colony was one of the most progressive in Catalonia. Its owner, industrialist and patron Eusebi Guel, actively collaborated with Gaudi and tried to provide all conveniences for his workers. This blend of interests led to the creation of a village with comfortable houses and a very unusual church. Like many of Gaudi's buildings, it was not completed, but even the small part that he managed to erect is impressive! We will explore unique interiors, bright stained glass windows, and colorful mosaics full of sacred symbols.
We will carefully examine the village itself: here, you can find well-preserved colorful brick houses of workers, buildings of a theater, club, and school, the doctor's house, and the factory director's house. Besides Gaudi, other famous Catalan modernists also participated in the construction of the colony. I will tell you how they managed to create an exemplary workers' village - both from an architectural and functional point of view.
