About this experience
Turkey's historical heritage is so vast that it would take several lifetimes to explore its richness. But we will do the impossible: in one day we will visit the ancient city of Myra, see the mysterious rock tombs, and touch the walls of the church of Saint Nicholas, who was once the bishop there himself. And we will end the day on a boat, admiring the city sunk 25 centuries ago through the transparent depths of the Mediterranean Sea.
What to Expect
Ancient City of Myra
In the morning, we will pick you up from your home and head towards Demre. Here are the ruins of the town of Myra, which we will explore first. This is an ancient Lycian city located on the Andrak River. According to legend, it was here, in the bay by the river, that the Apostle Peter landed before departing to Rome.
The Lycian people had a custom of burying the dead in elevated places, as it was believed to help them reach heaven. We will see the tombs located in the rocks. While walking through the ancient ruins, I will tell you about the city's little and big secrets, its times of prosperity, and the reasons for its decline.
To Saint Nicholas
Myra also became a center of Christian pilgrimage from all over the world. And that's because in the 4th century, Saint Nicholas himself was the bishop of the city church, and he was buried there. We will definitely visit the church of St. Nicholas, where you will have the opportunity to make a wish. And we will see the ancient amphitheater of Myra, built by the Romans.
The Sunken City
Next, we will head to Kekova - an island in the Mediterranean Sea. At its northern part lies the sunken city of Kavakova, which we will visit. No, you don't need scuba gear:) We will view it through the glass bottom of our boat. The water in the Mediterranean Sea is so clear that at a depth of 3 meters, we will have a clear view of the entire ancient city!
