About this experience
We firmly believe that exploring the culture of other countries and peoples is impossible without trying the local cuisine. Traditional Spanish dishes like tortilla, gazpacho, paella are prepared differently in each region. We will tell you about the peculiarities of Catalan cuisine, reveal the history of its most popular dishes in the most suitable places in the city, and teach you the correct sequence of a meal according to the Spaniards.
What to expect
🍹 🌮 Starting the meal…
Gastronomic journey in Barcelona will start with an aperitif. Catalans drink a glass of vermouth to stimulate their appetite. We will tell you about the history of Catalan vermouth and how to drink it correctly. Then we will visit a classic tapas bar in Barcelona. Here you can taste authentic Spanish snacks called pinchos, typical of the Basque Country. You will learn why pinchos were once offered as a free complement to drinks and how the size of traditional tapas decreased quickly after a decree by King Alfonso X.
🍛 🍤 Boqueria Market and Catalan lunch
At the oldest food market in Europe, Boqueria, you will learn about the history of Spanish cuisine's main dishes. You will discover what bacalao is and why Catalans still love it. We will talk specifically about the world-famous jamón, which is best tasted and purchased at the market. To delight in authentic Catalan cuisine, you can have lunch at one of the oldest restaurants, where you should try butifarra, a special sausage usually served with beans. Seafood lovers in Barcelona will enjoy traditional Catalan fish dishes - we will recommend the best places for this.
🍮 🍰 Spanish sweets
No real Spaniard finishes a meal without dessert. After lunch, we will offer you a taste of Catalan cream at one of the most authentic pastry shops in Barcelona. This traditional Catalan dish, similar to French crème brûlée, is made from milk and eggs and baked until a crispy sugar crust forms. During the tour, you will also be introduced to the main Spanish Christmas sweet called 'turron'. You will learn how it originated, what it is made of, and if desired, taste and purchase it as a sweet souvenir from Spain.
🍸 Final Note
To end our 'appetizing' tour of Barcelona, you will be introduced to another gastronomic Spanish tradition. As a digestif, the Pyrenean Peninsula offers a chupito - a small shot of liqueur or orujo, and we will recommend you try it at one of the pleasant establishments along the way.
🍒 Additionally
You will see the first horse trough in Barcelona. Along the way, you can visit the best knife shop selling Navajas knives made of Toledo steel. You will learn about 'garum' sauce and why two thousand years ago the Romans moved its production outside the fortress walls.
