Program
The Castellana Caves (Grotte di Castellana) is the largest speleological complex in Italy. The total route length is three kilometers: it takes at least two hours to explore numerous caves and ravines with mythological names. The speleological complex is a natural masterpiece, the result of centuries of work by underground waters: even human genius would not be able to create the beauty of sparkling thousands of colors of stalactites and stalagmites.
The cave is 60 m deep and 3 km long, with unique forms of stalagmites and stalactites - the largest karst cave complex in Italy. There are 2 routes offered for visiting the cave, one is 1 km long (50 minutes) and the other is 3 km long (1 hour 50 minutes).
The entrance to the caves is a vertical shaft more than sixty meters long. The first cave of the tourist route is La Grave. It is illuminated by powerful light coming from the outside. Thanks to the light stream, the cave hall looks extraordinarily majestic. The huge niches of the Castellana Caves impress with the grandeur of stalactites and stalagmites. It is difficult to understand what takes your breath away more when visiting the caves: the high humidity of the air and a constant temperature of 18 degrees or the delight! Each cave differs from the previous one in the quality of karst rocks and its appearance, highlighted by mythological names. First, you will pass from the 'Karst Cave' to the 'Black Cave', crossing the 'Owl Cave'. Then, passing through the 'Snake Corridor' into the 'Cliff Cave' and 'Little Paradise', you will enter the most famous cave of Castellana Caves - the 'White Cave' (Grotta Bianca). Visiting it is mandatory on any route. The White Cave is named the most beautiful cave in the world for its extraordinary whiteness and magnificence.
