About this experience
You will stroll through the ancient streets of Khiva and appreciate the impressive integrity of the architectural ensemble. Notice how elements of Zoroastrianism and Islam harmoniously coexist in the city. Visit three luxurious palaces, a mausoleum, and a mosque - at each location I will tell you what makes these places valuable. I will also reveal why Khiva is a city of woodcarvers.
What to expect
- Kunya-Ark Palace, which has changed over the centuries but has preserved the appearance of a fortress. The interior impresses with rich majolica decor, carved columns, and colorful ceilings.
- Nurullaboy Palace, where Asian decor is intertwined with European architecture. You will see beautifully preserved parquet floors made by Mennonites.
- Tash-Hauli Palace, consisting of a labyrinth of over 120 rooms. You will appreciate the khan's harem, where his wives and numerous concubines lived. I will show you the secret corridor through which women led to the khan.
- Mausoleum, built in honor of Pahlavan Mahmud, a poet with heroic strength. The inner walls of the mausoleum are covered with majolica tiles, creating intricate patterns.
- Wooden Juma Mosque from the 10th century, which was preserved even during the Mongol invasion. I will show you columns adorned with Zoroastrian symbols.
I will also talk about the rich cuisine of Khiva and show you how local flatbreads made from tomatoes and pumpkins are baked. I will explain the role of wood carving in the formation of Khiva. And much more!
